The University of Malta is the highest educational institution in Malta offering undergraduate Bachelor's Degrees, postgraduate Master's Degrees and postgraduate Doctorates (PhD). It is a member of the Association of Commonwealth Universities. The University traces its origins to the Collegium Melitense founded in 1592 making it one of the oldest universities in the World

Maltese have one of the highest standards of living in the Mediterranean and an impressive record in health and education.

The present new campus, opened in 1968, has recently been greatly extended to include theater-type lecture rooms and science, language and computer laboratories. The  ports complex  includes  an Olympic-sized swimming pool and a football ground, tennis courts, and a track. Most of the 8,000 Maltese students enrolled in this university not only don't pay tuition fees but receive a state funded student allowance.
